February 2024: Scholarly and Professional Achievements of Capital University Faculty, Staff, and Students

Congratulations to Edward J. Bernert (law) who published A Clear Lens for Tax Statutes in Tax Notes State. In the article, Bernert “provides background for the Ohio Supreme Court’s decision in Stingray to no longer construe tax statutes providing exemptions in a manner favoring tax collection, and he explores some background for and potential implications of the opinion.”

Ms. Tristen Davis (student and community engagement), Dr. Carmen Dixon (education), Dr. Nate Whelan-Jackson (philosophy), Dr. Linda Wolf, and Dr. Andrea M. Karkowski (psychology) published Reflective Pedagogy Community of Practice: Engaging Faculty and Staff in Reflective Pedagogy to Prepare for Eportfolio Launch in the Journal of Higher Education Theory and Practice. Excellent work!

Kudos to Dr. Jennifer Larson (biology) who, in collaboration with faculty from five other institutions, published A Framework for Leveraging Network Course-based Undergraduate Research Experience (CURE) Faculty to Develop, Validate, and Administer an Assessment Instrument in the Journal of Microbiology & Biology Education. The group designed and implemented an assessment instrument for a course-based undergraduate research project. While the assessment instrument is valuable for instructors, the process of creating the assessment instrument was highlighted as a guide for other course-based research groups interested in creating their own method of assessment.

Dr. Andrea M. Karkowski (psychology) has been accepted to serve in the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) Peer Review Corps. According to HLC, “HLC’s peer reviewers are expert volunteers who play an essential role in assuring the quality of our member institutions.” Congratulations!
